The Permanent Revolution

Text by Hossam el-Hamalawy
Hossam is an Egyptian journalist from Cairo

«#Jan25 The workers, middle class, military junta and the permanent revolution»

[…] At this point, the Tahrir Square occupation is likely to be suspended. But we have to take Tahrir to the factories now. As the revolution proceeds an inevitable class polarization is to happen. We have to be vigilant. We shouldn’t stop here… We hold the keys to the liberation of the entire region, not just Egypt… Onwards with a permanent revolution that will empower the people of this country with direct democracy from below… •

That was the last paragraph of Hossam el-Hamalawy's excellent blogpost with the titel «#Jan25 The workers, middle class, military junta and the permanent revolution». Read the whole text

The War You Don't See

Is Mubarak dead?

Short url: http://uleak.it/?5h
Here what I could find so far (15th february 2011, 18:29):

SOURCE 1

This blog entry on 13th of february 2011 at 2:26 pm by a swiss person calling him-/herself S.P. (User ID: 1217946) reads like this: «Hosni Moubarak has just past [writing error (?) also in original post] away in Germany's top private clinic. According to a nurse, who minutes ago contacted a radio station here in Switzerland, in this high end hospital near Bühl, called «Max-Grundig-Klinik Bühlerhöhe», in a small town which is near Baden Baden, in Germany, President Moubarak past away.»

What is a little weard is that the post is on a website with the name Godlike Produktions – UFOs, Conspiracy Theorists, Lunatic Fringe. Doesn't sound very reliable to me.

A quick Google search confirms though, that the clinic Max-Grundig-Klinik Bühlerhöhe does exist.

What is interesting though is, that another person, the swiss citizen and operator of the blog Anonymous Coward (OP) gives minutes later further details: «The call was made in German [language], so I did not understand everything, however, here are some details: He [Mubarak] was flown in, early this morning, in a deep coma. He has died at 6:53 pm at the Max-Grundig-Klinik»

Comparing the times mentioned both on the blog entries and in the text that would mean Mubarak passed away on 12th february 2011 because Bloggers and Clinic are in the same timezone.

Now in the first blog entry S.P. recalls that the nurse «who minutes ago [of 13th of february 2011 at 2:26 pm] contacted a radio station [which one?]» said Mubarak «just [minutes to hours?! before the 13th of february 2011 at 2:26 pm] past [writing error (?) also in original post] away»

This  [minutes to hours?! before the 13th of february 2011 at 2:26 pm] does obviously contradict the statement made minutes later by Anonymous Coward who said he passed away at [6:53 pm on 12th february 2011].

Another blog entry by Anonymous Coward provides another two sources 2 and 3 seemingly confirming the news in the blog. But it could also be the other way round, that sources 2 and 3 inspired source 1 to publish a hoax.

Source of the picture to date unknown.

SOURCE 2 and 3

Translated by Demode: «The newspaper Al-Wasat, based in Bahrain, citing sources close to the former rais Hosni Moubrak fell into a coma just before his forced departure from Cairo on Feb. 11 to get to Sharm El Sheikh Red Sea. The Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm reported today that Mubarak is currently in Baden, Germany for emergency medical treatment.»

However, that report by Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Youm journalist Ahmed El-Sawi on february 13th 2011 at 10:22h reporting that «Mubarak is currently in Baden[-Baden], Germany for emergency medical treatment.» contradicts (and is now automatically relayed?) an article written in the same newspaper on february 14th 2011 at 11:21h by Staff stating that «informed sources»«said that Mubarak is receiving treatment at his residence in the resort town, adding that it has not yet been decided whether he should be transported to a hospital, either in Egypt or abroad.»

SOURCE 4

Nevertheless Reuter journalists Andrew Hammond and Samia Nakhoul write today, 15th february, that «Speculation has swirled about Mubarak's health, including some talk that he may have already died. Arab diplomats, including one Egyptian, said on Tuesday (today), 15th february 2011 that they had not heard any news that Mubarak had died.» and «The Asharq al-Awsat report said Mubarak, 82, had refused advice to travel to Germany for treatment. He underwent gallbladder surgery there last year, and since then rumors about his health have frequently surfaced.»

So I would conclude, that Mubarak has defenitely not gone to Germany until this morning, most probably is still in or close to Sharm al-Sheikh but possibly in a very serious health condition.

Well, «good health» is probably a question of definition. And didn't Al Arabiya loose a lot of its credibility lately?

ISRAEL'S SECRET WEAPON

First shown in March 2003, two days before the start of the war on Iraq, the BBC film «Israel’s Secret Weapon» took as its starting point Mordechai Vanunu’s revelations and found further evidence of Israel’s nuclear arsenal. It’s as important today as it was then.

«What was the reaction to this broadcast by the rulers of this,
by all means presented democratic State of Israel?
The Government Press Office, a department of the Prime Minister Office,
barred BBC correspondents accredited in Israel from contacts with government
ministers and officials, as well as from official press conferences
(with the exception of such by the PM).»

Sean Egan's Baby Steps

This is a special blogpost.
About mountaineers risking their lives to reach the top of the summit, the top of the world.
In the so called «death zone».

Of course you are completely free to enjoy this blogpost the way you want. But my proposal for your best experience is following:
1. Look first at all the images in the post.
2. Then enjoy the introduction. It is important. Even if you only realize later on… Try to enter the flow feeling the music will bring you in and feel this energy, this mystic feeling…
3. Then read all the text.
4. After that see all the films. Be warned. They are intense (Children should only see this films (if ever!) in company of adults that have time and energy to support them adequately).

1. Introduction: Sunrise at Mount Everest

2. Sean Egan's Baby Steps – Tragedy on Everest

Who are you?

In the Blue of the glacier,
the color of my eyes,

In the haul of the wind,
my breathing,

In the symphony of thousand lights,
my voice,

In the uproar of avalanches
my unquiet heart,

In the crystal glitter of snow
my clear mind,

In the darkness of the underground
my fear,

In its beauty
my happiness,

In its inhospitableness
the sweat of my perseverance,

In its realm
my modesty,

In its silence
my peace,

In its immeasurable widths
my liberty,

In its eternity
my ecstasy.

The mountain – my life.

(poem by Donatella for Christian Kuntner.
Christian died on Annapurna's North side on 18th May 2005,
in an ice avalanche after descending from the summit.)

Mountaineer Mark Inglis shows his frostbitten hands after summoning
Mount Everest in 2006 (Photo: NZPA) ***

Inglis, the first double amputee to reach Everest's peak, was in a group of climbers who came across oxygen-deprived British climber David Sharp about 300 metres below the summit on May 15. Inglis' group and several others decided to push on. Sharp, who was climbing alone after unsuccessful attempts to reach the top in 2003 and 2004, later died.

«Despite the snow and ice, Everest is as dry as a desert, the sun and wind quickly mummify human remains.» The picture above serves as an example, it shows the corpse of mountaineer George Mallory, lost on Everest in 1924, and the state in which it was found in 1999 after 75 years exposed.

3. A sea of lead, a sky of slate – abandoned on Everest

In 2006, a lone climber attempting the summit of Mount Everest for the third time was, purely by chance, caught in an amateur photograph taken by another climber of the scenic mountaintop ahead. The climber in the photograph was making his way up what is known as the Final Push of the Northeast ridge, between Camp VI at 8230 meters altitude and the summit. It was late in the afternoon, a foolishly reckless time to undertake the lengthy and dangerous route.
It would be many hours before the photographer and his climbing team saw the man again. Leaving the camp at the recommended time, shortly before midnight in order to reach the summit at daybreak, they were first in line of a total of roughly 40 climbers attempting the Final Push that day. A long train of men, all tethered to the lengths of rope permanently in place to keep climbers on the right track.
For decades, this rope had taken climbers within a few feet of what became known as Green Boots cave. A small limestone overhang located at 8500m, it was already infamous among climbers for the same reason it earned its nickname. For the past ten years, the body of a climber who died in 1996 has been a grim landmark for every climber of the Northeast route, lying curled up in the fetal position, wearing fluorescent green mountaineering boots.

«Green Boots» died on Mount Everest in 1996.
His body is still there – mummified like on the day of his accident.
(Picture taken from http://godheadv.blogspot.com/ )

This morning, however, Green Boots had company. Sitting no more than two feet to the left of the corpse was a man who at first glance appeared to be dead. His gloved hands were on his knees, his hood and hat cast his face in shadow. The only feature visible was the man's severely frostbitten nose, already a greenish black hue. On closer inspection, the vapor from the man's breath could be seen rising…

Hip Hop – when you get as mature as human being to turn all your feelings, your anger, your love, your suffering and your mourning into creativity. That's the moment when homo sapiens sapiens is not just «another ape». That's how Hip Hop began.

But never have I seen an example as impressive as the folk of egypt right now, Tahrir Square only beeing a symbol of all the egyptian squares and streets reclaimed by the people. Rightly reclaimed by the people! Government is built and sustained by our money, our support, our sweat, our love, our blood, our children, our tears… All governments of this world!

We are the people.
There are times, when we don't forget.
There are times, when we don't forgive.
We are legion.
Expect us.

Niqab, Tschador, Burka…

FREEDOM
The question is not veil or not veil, the real question is: Is everybody in a country, everybody on this planet, FREE to wear whatever he or she wants (complete veiling and complete nakedness being the two rather rare extremes) while being completely accepted? It’s the quantity and quality of Freedom we’re looking for, not some dress code that might or might also not be an external symbol for a movement (whatever movement, Ku-Klux-Klan, Red Cross, Waffen-SS, orthodox jew, Sans-culottes, moslem…) and its values/value-meme.

Again: what we are all – all citizens of this planet – looking for is freedom. Freedom to live our life in the way to be happy and content. And as long as nobody is limiting the freedom of anybody else by wearing the clothes of his/her choice, everybody of us should be allowed to do so. This includes wearing a Niqab or a Burqa during times of private life. On private and public ground.

EXCEPTIONS
Exceptions have to be made in professional life or in official situations. For example a state officer has to be able to identify the person he/she is talking to. You cannot issue a passport to a person you can't identify. Also politicians or people in public positions like police officers or people that deal professionally with clients should respectfully go unveiled. Because People have a right to know who is talking to them and taking decisions in their names (democracy) or interest (doctors for example), who they're dealing with. Also in security risk situations one must (not may, must!) dress appropriately: for example when crossing borders of countries one has to unveil (complete head unveiled, the original hair open or at least the «hair» (wig, artificial teeth, artificial limb etc.) you wear usually each day) or put a minimum of clothes on (at least a bathing suit but with some respect for other people it should be more, a short, a top, some pair of shoes I propose) and also when a dress code could harm people, for example during sports…

If one should decide to go to the extremes and wear a burqa or nothing at all, that person has to take full responsibility towards society and show more respect to people and be more mindful and careful about certain situations than others. This includes for example, that extremes can only demand respect for their values if they respect other extremes as well. So – as paradoxical as it might seem at first sight – someone in a burqa has no right at all to refuse a vacant seat to someone naked in public transport and the other way round of course while, at the same time, more respect is owed to less extreme citizens. That should be accepted and normal.

I do not condone the somewhat subliminal, slightly depressive face expression of the women in the illustration above much in the same way I do not condone the often played naÏveté of certain extreme moslems when talking about this topic.

OPRESSION
However: an external symbol could maybe be a sign of lack of that freedom. In regard to this lack of freedom it has then to be questioned. But not otherwise.

If the women in the picture above naturally accept lightly dressed people – say in a western style swimsuit – as their seat neighbor in a tramway for example (but only then) they have all right to demand Liberté, Egalité and Fraternité.
